The Arctic is a vast region centered on the North Pole and includes the Arctic Ocean which is full of arctic animals such as polar bears, penguins, arctic foxes, reindeers, fur seals, snow gooses, arctic hares, salmons, seagulls, narwhals, beluga whales and more. The central part is frozen and is the permanent ice, islands of which the largest is Greenland covered by an ice cap (ice sheet), and portions of continents. The boundary of the Arctic Circle is the northern boundary of the forest, the taiga. The Arctic Ocean opens to the Pacific Ocean through the Bering Strait and into the Atlantic Ocean. The sea ice has a width of 2 to 3 m in summer and 3 to 4 m in winter. In winter seasonal ice forms and melts in summer. Winter lasts 6 months and plunges the North Pole in the dark.
